EducationI completed an English degree and a minor in history at Appalachian State University. I graduated with a 3.95 GPA.
ExperienceI have tutored writing in a formal setting for two plus years. I have been trained as a writing consultant and know the most recent teaching methods for working one-on-one with students. My tutoring philosophy is simple: help students improve their writing by focusing on what they are doing well. This is not to say I will look at a paper and say, “bless your heart, why isn’t that nice.” Rather, I would say, “the image of the rose growing from the concrete really demonstrates the adversity you’re trying to express in this paper.” I believe critical, honest, positive feedback is a better foundation for growth in reading and reading skills, than critical negative feedback.
Also, I developed and taught a poetry class to the blind this summer. The blind are a group that essentially is illiterate. While people born blind, or who become blind at a young age, learn braille and gain access to print literature, most people aren’t born blind. Most people go blind when they are older and don’t have the flexible brain required to acquire a new language. This meant that when I developed my course, I needed to create a class that would enable someone who could not read print media to create poems and to learn about poetry. What does this mean for your child? If your child is not reading and has no interest in reading, I have a class that engages them in literature and creative writing without print. It might not teach your child how to read, but it is my hope it would foster an interest in reading, writing, and verbal expression.
If you’re curious about my qualifications as a poet, here is a link showing one of the two awards I have won: http://www.news.appstate.edu/2012/05/03/kathryn-kehoe/
Note: If I start meeting with a student regularly, I am willing to negotiate a lower rate for the duration of the year or semester.
HobbiesI love writing poetry, practicing yoga, and baking bread .
